Cleaning Diamonds

Even though diamonds are the hardest objects on Earth, they can be very fragile. In addition, you will always need to make sure that the cleaning procedure does not cause the diamond to loosen from its setting. Typically, the more you can avoid cleaning diamonds, the better off you will be.

If you need to clean diamonds, you should not use anything harder than the softest toothbrush you can find. While a harder toothbrush will not scratch the surface of the diamond, it may dislodge the stone from its setting. As may be expected, if you are not able to remove soil and debris from a difficult area, it may be best to take the piece to a professional jeweller. At the very least, if the stone does become loose, he/she will be able to reset it.

In some cases, you may be able to get away with simply soaking your diamonds. Ideally you should use mild dish detergent and warm water. On the other hand, if you are dealing with heavy soiling, you can also use ammonia and water. After the diamond has been allowed to soak for a few minutes, you can try using a soft toothbrush to clean around back and other areas. Once you are satisfied that all of the debris is removed, you can simply pat the diamond dry with a soft towel.

When you are cleaning diamonds, it can be very easy to drop them, or cause them to bump into other hard surfaces. As you may be aware, diamonds are extremely brittle. Even though a diamond can scratch a wooden surface or a glass bowl, it may not survive being dropped on the same type of surface. If you already know that your jewelry is going to be slippery when you remove it from the bowl, it may help to place a sponge inside the bowl. At the very least, if you do drop the diamond, it will be cushioned. In a similar way, you should also use a towel or some other cushioning material to cover any area where the diamond might land.

Many people that decide to clean diamonds often wonder what happens when they slip out of the setting, or they are bumped into some object.  Since diamonds are so fragile, they may actually shatter into tiny pieces.  Therefore, aside from observing cautions about the setting of each diamond, you should also take every precaution in order to make sure that your diamond does not drop and shatter during the cleaning process.
