Diamond Certificates

If you don't have experience with looking into stones to find flaws and inclusions, you will have a very hard time determining whether or not one diamond is more valuable than another. Fortunately, reputable jewellers will always provide diamond certificates that will enable you to judge the value of each diamond based on a simple set of numerical scales. Among other things, you will be able to compare the numerical values for clarity, cut, carat weight, and colour. Once you are able to obtain this type of information, it will be much easier to make a buying decision.

When you are purchasing diamonds, you should always make sure that you get a copy of its grading certificate. Ideally, this should be kept in a safe place, so that you always know the exact value of the diamond in your care. That said, if you happen to lose this certificate, you can send the diamond in for re-evaluation. Typically, diamond quality testing is only performed by a few independent laboratories. While it may take some additional effort, at least you will be able to prove the quality of the diamond if you decide to sell it later on.

There will be times when you cannot get a certificate that reveals the nature and value of the diamond. You will have to ask a jeweller to make some preliminary cuts in order to take a look inside. While this will give you some ideas about the clarity and colour of the stone, it will not give you any final indicators about what the faceted jewel will look like.

Regardless of whether you are buying an assembled piece of jewelry, or loose diamonds that have been faceted, you should make sure that you get a certificate that details the quality of the stone. Even if you decide you are never going to sell this particular stone, you may still need proof of its value. Among other things, if you decide to have the stone insured, this type of appraisal will ensure that you select the right coverage. In addition, there is nothing quite like having this type of information on hand when you decide to buy more diamonds that you may want to wear with the ones you already have.
